February 21, I want to start the education part of my blog with one of my very favorite teaching strategies. I have found it especially effective with 9th graders. Give students various questions about to ponder and write about on a particular topic.

It was like speed dating, just with teachers. You have a defined amount of time with one teacher, as soon as you get to the interesting parts, then you get pushed to the next teacher. Ahead of the teacher conference, which they call it nowadays, we had to select specific times to meet key teachers.

One such topic is World War II. Based on a technique I had the opportunity to observe in a U. History class, I have developed an activity to help provide students with important background knowledge in an an informative yet engaging way! It is their job to become informed enough about the topic so that they can teach about it to others. Because I typically use this as an introductory activity, I only spend two days on it — Day 1 for research and Day 2 for speed dating.

Although the actual activity itself is relatively straightforward, the most challenging aspect is the preparation involved to make sure it runs smoothly. Here is how I typically plan for it: You can download my handouts and answer key here!

Not only will it get you moving but people will notice you and be curious about you. It will make speaking to women much easier afterwards. Do this without any ulterior motive to pick up a woman — just do it to be sociable and to be generous. People both men and women will appreciate this and reciprocate. If you tell her you are planning to host this big party and would like to invite her, she will be more comfortable to give you her number than if you ask for it because you want to take her on a date.

The Parallel Project offers free online maths worksheets each weekend, which are automatically marked and which are designed to stretch the most ambitious and able students. Parallel is freely available to all schools, just like his second project, Who Wants To Be A Mathematician, which is a maths competition aimed at 6th formers. And the Top-Top Set Maths Project currently works with a dozen schools to subsidise an additional maths set beyond the normal top set , with the intention of consistently stretching the keenest maths students from Year 7 upwards.

Everyone has 90 seconds to tell a colleague about their idea, before swapping and hearing from them. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Share on Google Share by email A misspent evening of speed dating when I was much younger has provided inspiration for a learning technique that we love to use at tutor2u — research speed dating. This works best when there is series of examples for a particular topic that students need to know. For example, in my recent economics teaching on financial markets, each learner was allocated a particular asset bubble from sometime in the period to the present day.

In recent politics teaching, each learner was allocated a specific political scandal from the s onwards involving a member of the Cabinet.

Pernille Ripp I have spent the last few hours quietly wandering around NCTE, trying to listen more than talk, processing, pondering, and also trying to reflect on the work that lies ahead when I return to room d this Monday. When the reality of what it means to teach comes back versus this dream world where we sit and discuss how we can change what we do to make it work for all kids.

To work for all adults. Only if we make it. Because in our school, every day, we are surrounded by people who have ideas. By people whose voices may not have been heard, yet. People whose ideas have not grown past their own classroom doors.

It involves getting together 10 or more men and women and providing them with an opportunity to talk to each other, one-on-one, for five minutes each. I modified this dating technique to make classroom presentations provide more practice with oral language while making them less threatening for students.

Procedure What you do is you have students prepare a five-minute oral presentation, based on a topic of your choice. I call these “Speed Demos” with my students.

Micro Presentations and Speed Dating I have set this as a homework task or a seminar task for my A Level students, however it can work with any age group really. It is also really good for those students who need to build up to whole class or bigger group presentations.

Lower levels are very literal and need time to prep, but my upper levels get a shorter prep time and often use alter-egos instead of their true personality. It makes it hysterical. I set up the room with long tables with girls on one side and boys on the other so they are facing each other. For example, if you have 18 guys and 12 girls, you will need 3 guys to be on the girl side. Here is the super basic form that I used with Spanish I to plan their answers and questions.

Random Stories – This is not fancy, but is a wonderful way to get the kids speaking. I divide the students into different groups and give them each a photograph. The photos are usually of landscapes, street scenes, etc. Students then work together to come up with stories about the picture. Each student creates a sentence, and the others need to build on it. I get some truly crazy stories, but they all stay in the target language!

Board Games – I use the game Clue with my students.

Hey baby, wanna clap erasers together later? The illicit, forbidden, and most often scandalous nature of these relationships can be mined for angst, and generally doesn’t cause real life issues because the actors themselves are generally all above the age of consent thanks to Dawson Casting. Even if it was not illegal, the scandal that would erupt from this socially unacceptable affair would be so devastating it would basically cost a teacher or professor his or her job forever.

Fiona Aubrey-Smith explains Inspired and run by a national group of headteachers, Speed Learning is an innovative way of enabling schools to share professional knowledge about current challenges, strategies and practice. The Speed Learning ethos is fast-paced, freely accessible, and unapologetically focused on classroom impact. As primary head Jane Ratcliffe explained: At Cholsey this was delivered by Russell Prue and gave attendees practical and engaging ideas for bringing innovation to every classroom.

There is an hour-long carousel, with 10 tables, and the hour is divided into six slots of 10 minutes, such that teachers prioritise what they will engage with. This means that both table-host and participant benefit. At Cholsey, colleagues shared mathematical strategies, with Ladygrove Park Primary sharing early years expertise. Other table hosts shared ways for teachers to bring interactive resources into the classroom, and free ways to begin to use school radio to extend collaboration and literacy skills.

Leadership table hosts talked about strategies for monitoring teacher quality, distributed school leadership, and the outcomes of research showing strategies to raise the attainment of White working class boys. Nicky Hughes, deputy head at Cholsey, said: It was an intense, but exciting and energising learning experience.
